Freshers Prepare for Next Year
With first time students across Bristol already settled in to University life, they are likely looking forward to the Christmas break and mum’s roast. However, before the December break we’d recommend thinking about housing in preparation for next year.
Whilst it might seem a lifetime away at the moment, the earlier you begin looking into the details of a move, what properties are available, your budgets, and who you’re going to live with the better. We have seen countless students leave the decision making until the month before and end up living further away from campus than desired and not necessarily with those they wanted to live with.
So, in spirit of following our own advice, a few members of the Digs team headed to the University of Bristol’s Housing Fair last week.
Housing Fair Success
Taking place at Wills Memorial Building on the University of Bristol campus, the team attended this year’s Housing Fair. Complete with presentations on what to look out for when house-hunting, the hall saw more than 500 students visiting the stands.
Providing solid advice to new students was our key aim for the day. In fact, the Digs team saw a host of students pop by for a chat, happy with our informative and useful advice.
With lots of enquiries throughout the day we also booked a number of viewings on the spot for students well ahead of the game.
Our Top Tips
Thinking about moving out of halls can be relatively stressful for many. But, if you prepare yourself and keep calm it doesn’t have to be. We’ve got a couple of top tips to ensure you don’t let the stress get the better of you and instead start moving forward with finding suitable housing.
- Work Out Your Budget – How much you’re able to spend will determine a number of options available to you when house searching. Ensure you take into consideration bills, such as heating, electricity and TV license when calculating your budgets.
- Pick the Right Housemates – Whilst a difficult decision, particularly this early on in your University life, choosing the right group of people to live with is key. Think about it carefully, taking into consideration not just those who you know will be up for another night at the Student Union, but those you can trust with the practical side of things too.
- Start Looking – Think about locations and where might be the most practical place for you to live in terms of distance to lectures for example. Once you know where you want to live start looking around and ensure that you use the map view on our website.
- Ask the Right Questions – Make sure you ask the right questions when you do begin your search. In fact, we’ve written an entire post dedicated to questions you should ask when moving house to help you on your way.
- Don’t Panic – Above everything else, don’t panic. The process is a lot more straightforward than it may first seem.
